The purpose of this project is to provide information about accessible outdoor recreation facilities and programs on public lands in Colorado that are available to persons of all abilities. This project was created with support from National Geographic Maps, Colorado State Parks, Colorado Division of Wildlife, U. S. Forest Service, Easter Seals Colorado, Colorado School of Mines, and the Kenneth Kendal King Foundation.

We will provide information on campgrounds, wildlife viewing areas, and trails that incorporate universal design.  If you know of a site that you think should be listed, please send us an e-mail.

Arapaho National Wildlife Refuge Headquarters
Arapaho National Wildlife Refuge

This is a great site for the whole family.  A six-mile self-guided auto tour allows for viewing from your car of  wetland habitats and the animals and waterfowl, shore and marsh birds that are currently there. The Refuge provides habitat for a variety of wildlife species including 198 species of birds, 32 species of mammals, 6 species of reptiles and amphibians, and 9 species of fish.

The refuge headquarters building has tactile (interactive) exhibits  that tell about the wildlife found on the refuge.

There are restrooms (which are accessible) on the refuge at the headquarters and these are open only during office hours: Monday - Friday 7:00am - 4:30pm.

Other restrooms ( that are open from sunrise to sunset and are accessible) can be found at the entrance of the boardwalk.

Location: South of Walden, Colorado on State Highway 125

Lots of things to touch, learn and take home fun memories

We would like to hear from you. What Colorado outdoor recreation site (that uses universal design) do you recommend?

It is always important that you call the recreation site owner and verify the information about a site.  Acts of nature or construction could make the site less accessible.
