"The Corridor" is located along U. S.
Highway 40 between Rocky Mountain Village (Easter Seals Colorado) at Empire Junction on Interstate 70 and the National
Sports Center for the Disabled in Winter Park. The purpose of the 26-mile long Corridor is to provide several different educational experiences
for outdoor recreation users that will include persons of all ages and abilities. The general public will be given opportunities
to express their ideas and suggestions on these designs for facilities, programs, and products
that use universal design.
"The Corridor" partners are working to restore the original
wagon road using the new Architectural Barriers Act (ABA) Accessibility Guidelines for Outdoor Developed
Areas for trails. Each section of the restored trail will incorporate different
reguirements for running slope, cross-slope, passing spaces and resting interals. Teaching tools will be provided for trail
builders that explain the requirments for each section of the restored wagon road.
Sections of the early automobile road built in the 1920's still
remain on both sides of the Pass. These pull-outs will be used for designing interpretation exbits with special
emphasis on designs that will include persons with hearing and visual impairments. Check out the The American Dipper Project.
Partners for Access to the Woods, PAW, first began working on the idea
of "The Corridor" in early 1997 with only the Colorado Department of Transportation and the United States Forest Service as
partners. Now with many more partners, work along the "Corridor" is picking up steam.
